Unboxing and Initial Setup
When your G5 Vibracare arrives, you will find the main percussion unit, a selection of applicator heads, a power cord, and the user manual. Before first use, take a moment to familiarize yourself with the device’s components.
The Vibracare features a variable-speed control that allows you to adjust the percussion intensity from gentle to vigorous. The applicator attachment mechanism is designed for quick, tool-free changes — simply align the applicator with the drive shaft and secure it with a quarter-turn. Always ensure the applicator is firmly seated before powering on the device.
Important: Before using the Vibracare for the first time, consult with your healthcare provider or respiratory therapist to establish the appropriate treatment protocol for your specific condition — whether you are managing COPD, cystic fibrosis, bronchiectasis, or another respiratory condition. The guidance in this article is general in nature and should not replace personalized medical advice.
Understanding Your Applicators
One of the Vibracare’s key design features is its range of interchangeable applicators, each intended for different treatment areas and applications. Selecting the right applicator is an important part of effective therapy.
For Chest Percussion (Respiratory Therapy):
- Chest Percussor (Large Cup) — The primary applicator for chest physiotherapy. Its concave design is intended to distribute percussion energy broadly across the chest wall. This is typically the applicator your respiratory therapist will recommend for airway clearance treatments.
- Pediatric Percussor (Small Cup) — A smaller version designed for pediatric patients or for treating smaller body areas.
For Pain Management and Musculoskeletal Therapy:
- General Purpose Applicator — A versatile, medium-density head suitable for broad muscle groups like the back, thighs, and shoulders.
- Directional Stroke Applicator — Designed for directional massage along muscle fibers, which may support circulation and muscle relaxation.
- Spot Applicator — A focused, smaller head for targeted treatment of specific trigger points or smaller muscle groups.
- Abdominal Applicator — A specialized soft applicator designed for gentle abdominal treatment.
Your healthcare provider can help you determine which applicators are most appropriate for your treatment plan. Additional applicators and accessories are available in our online shop.
Chest Percussion Technique for Respiratory Therapy
Chest percussion is typically performed in conjunction with postural drainage — specific body positions that use gravity to help move loosened secretions toward the larger airways. Your respiratory therapist will prescribe the specific positions and treatment sequence based on which lung segments need attention.
General Steps:
- Position yourself (or the patient) as directed by your therapist. Common positions include sitting upright, lying on each side, and lying face-down with the head slightly lower than the feet. Each position targets different lung segments.
- Attach the chest percussor applicator and set the speed to the level recommended by your therapist. Most patients start at a lower speed and gradually increase as comfort allows.
- Apply the device to the designated chest or back area. Use gentle, steady pressure — let the device do the work. The gyratory motion is designed to deliver effective percussion without requiring you to press hard.
- Treat each designated area for the duration prescribed by your therapist — typically 3 to 5 minutes per position.
- After each position, pause and encourage coughing or huffing (a forced exhalation technique) to help clear mobilized secretions.
- Move to the next position and repeat until all prescribed segments have been treated.
Tips for Effective Treatment:
- Avoid percussion directly over the spine, sternum (breastbone), or bony prominences.
- Do not percuss over areas of acute injury, inflammation, or skin breakdown.
- Treatment is typically performed 1–4 times daily, depending on your condition and your therapist’s recommendations.
- Keep a glass of water nearby — staying hydrated may help keep secretions thinner and easier to mobilize.
- If you experience any pain, unusual shortness of breath, or discomfort during treatment, stop and consult your healthcare provider.
Pain Management and Muscle Therapy Technique
The Vibracare is also designed to support pain management and musculoskeletal therapy. For these applications, you will typically use the general purpose, directional stroke, or spot applicators rather than the chest percussor.
General Steps:
- Select the appropriate applicator for the treatment area. Use the general purpose head for large muscle groups, the directional stroke head for long muscles, and the spot head for targeted trigger points.
- Start at a low speed and gradually increase to a comfortable intensity. The goal is to feel a deep, rhythmic percussion that is firm but not painful.
- Move the device slowly across the treatment area in smooth, overlapping strokes. For the directional stroke applicator, follow the direction of the muscle fibers.
- Spend 2–5 minutes on each treatment area. Do not over-treat a single area — if the skin becomes red or the area feels tender, move on.
- After treatment, gentle stretching of the treated muscles may complement the percussion therapy.
Common Treatment Areas:
- Upper back and shoulders (trapezius, rhomboids)
- Lower back (erector spinae, quadratus lumborum)
- Thighs and calves (quadriceps, hamstrings, gastrocnemius)
- Arms and forearms (for repetitive strain or tension)
Maintenance and Care
The G5 Vibracare is built for durability, but proper maintenance will help ensure years of reliable performance.
- After each use: Wipe the applicator and device housing with a soft, damp cloth. For infection control in multi-patient settings, follow your facility’s disinfection protocols.
- Applicator care: Applicators can be cleaned with mild soap and water. Do not submerge the main unit in water.
- Storage: Store the device in a clean, dry location. Avoid extreme temperatures. Keep the power cord loosely coiled — do not wrap it tightly around the device.
- Inspection: Periodically check the power cord for fraying or damage. Inspect applicators for cracks or wear. Replace any damaged components promptly.
- Service: The Vibracare has no user-serviceable internal parts. If the device requires repair, contact G5 General Physiotherapy at (800) 237-1832.
